About

The UBC Biorefinery Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC) is a globally unique, pilot-scale, biomass research, development and demonstration facility.

Our Mission

Development of low-carbon, market-ready bioenergy products and carbon-negative energy systems

It aims to reduce the barriers and risks of technology scale-up to market new biofuels and bioproducts which have been identified by industry as the largest challenges to developing successful bioproducts. BRIC propels the research team to global leadership with its expertise in both the thermochemical and biochemical conversion needed to develop individual technologies at a scale relevant to commercialization, which has rarely been attempted in a university setting.

“The low-carbon and carbon-negative technologies that will be developed at BRIC will help Canada meet its 2030 and 2050 greenhouse gas mitigation targets and potentially reverse some of the environmental damage that has already been done.”

Dr. Xiaotao Bi

Within 5 years, the UBC team and its industry partners will translate fundamental research outcomes into new prototypes which will be refined into commercializable, market-ready bioproducts. For companies, BRIC reduces bioproduct development risks and demonstrates potential profitability by quantifying, validating and certifying the economic, social and environmental benefits inherent in producing bioproducts.
