Equipment at new facility

Microwave-Assisted Pyrolysis of Biomass in a Pulsed Fluidized

This state-of-the-art novel fluidized bed reactor will be used to efficiently convert biomass material to biofuel. Due to the unique internal microwave heating of biomass particles, and in-situ microwave-assisted catalytic cracking of organic vapours on hot catalyst surface, bio-oil quality can be improved significantly, as reflected by low oxygen content, low acidity and viscosity in preliminary tests.

Production Of Pellets For Sown Stream Conversion Processes

This complete line of equipment is comprised of 4 main pieces: a Schutte Buffalo hammer mill, a Komarek roller briquetting, An Instron materials testing system and a Forseberg gravity table. The combination of equipment items 1-4 provides our researchers with the necessary biomass preparation, preprocessing and characterization capabilities.

Pilot Scale Reactor

Designed Bio-oil Upgrading System

This pilot-scale reactor has been commissioned for conversion of biomass-derived pyrolysis oils into high quality liquid fuel. The unit consists of a heated reactor packed with a bed of solid catalyst and a continuous supply of liquid feed and hydrogen gas. The reactor is designed to operate continuously in order to generate sufficient sample volumes of upgraded bio-oil that will further undergo engine combustion tests.

Agilent 8890 Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS)

This gas chromatography–mass spectrometry for biomass analysis of biomass extractives instrument enables the identification and quantification of low concentration, chemically complex biomass extractives. System components are optimized for this purpose.
